FITNESS INDUSTRY QUALIFICATIONS

L2 Gym Instructor
Active IQ
Studying for this qualification provided me with an introduction to gym instructing and working with small client groups and taught me about the fundamentals of nutrition and gym-based program design.

L2 Exercise to Music Instructor
Active IQ
Studying for this qualification taught me how to plan and instruct exercise classes safely and efficiently. I learned how to use music to motivate others to exercise in a group setting, and how to work effectively as an Exercise to Music Instructor.

L3 Personal Trainer
Active IQ
Compared with L2 qualifications, this Diploma in Personal Training is a more intense course studied over a longer time period. It taught me fundamental in-depth information about nutrition and programme design. I have since developed and grown as a coach, and teach L2 and L3 qualifications to soon-to-be instructors and coaches freelance.

L3 Award in Education and Training
Active IQ
This qualification formally recognises my ability to teach and assess in the fitness industry. I regularly teach and assess aspiring L2 Gym Instructors and Personal Trainers freelance, and it is a privilege to have a platform that allows me to pass on my knowledge.

L3 Sports Massage Therapist
Active IQ
Studying for this Diploma qualification helped me to gain the skills necessary to assess and treat clients with soft tissue dysfunction. I am also able to apply massage techniques to help clients prepare for and recover after sporting events or training sessions, and I can carry out maintenance sports massages, including deep tissue massage techniques.

CPD in Functional Cupping Therapy
Sports Therapy Scotland
I carried out in-person practical CPD, learning the safe and effective application of dry cupping techniques in combination with other sports massage therapies. I experienced cupping as a beneficial add-on to sports therapy personally, and felt passionate about being able to introduce my clients to dry cupping during their treatments, where appropriate.

CPD in Kinesiology Taping and Strapping
Sporttape Academy
I had informal and practical knowledge of K-taping and strapping from being an athlete, but consolidated my skills by undertaking continued professional learning about taping and strapping. I gained additional awareness of contraindications, best techniques to ensure that tape adheres longer, and thus providing the client with better value.

L3 Award in Budget Planning
London School of International Business
Perhaps not the most obvious qualification needed in the fitness industry, but yet a skill that sets me apart is my professional knowledge of budget planning. I pass on my knowledge regularly to those studying on the L2 and L3 courses I teach, but also offer individually tailored business coaching to newly qualified Personal Trainers and coaches, and efficient budget planning is one of the most valuable skills required by any successful business owner.

L3 Award in Project Planning
London School of International Business
Again perhaps not the most obvious skill required by any coach or fitness industry professional is project planning. The more work a business owner begins to take on, the more important it is to have impeccable project planning skills. Clients will receive their work on time, business growth is planned and managed, and clients have a superior experience being part of the business. I highlight important project management concepts to those new fitness industry professionals who work on their business structure with me.
ACADEMIC QUALIFICATIONS

1st Class BSc Honours in Human Anatomy
University of Dundee
I have advanced knowledge of the human body (anatomy) and its function (physiology).

One of my specialist areas as a 1:1 and online coach is individualised movement pattern correction and it is derived from my intensive study of human gross anatomy based on human cadaveric dissection.
Understanding human biomechanics and movement in health and disease is the bread and butter of an anatomist, and I apply my knowledge in a coaching setting on an every day basis.

MSc Forensic Anthropology with Merit
University of Dundee
I studied joints, bone injury and trauma in depth, and I found that this broadened my knowledge base of human anatomy and physiology significantly.

I learned how the body reacts to injuries, diseases and deficiencies, and how to prevent these effectively. In-depth study of skeletal anatomy and joints compliments my undergraduate degree by expanding my in-depth knowledge of soft-tissue to hard-tissue anatomy.

PGCert in Clinical Nutrition
University of Aberdeen
I hold a Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Nutrition from the University of Aberdeen.

I studied towards this degree part-time as part of my professional career development as a coach. I strive to provide a holistic coaching experience, and have therefore a strong interest in human nutrition for disease prevention, across all life stages. Specifically, I learnt about appropriate use of nutritional supplementation, nutrition during different life stages (e.g. menopause), and nutritional requirements of specialist populations.
